James Monroe, fifth U.S. president from 1817-1825. Best known for issuing the Monroe Doctrine, opposing European colonialism in the Americas. He also served as governor of Virginia, Secretary of State, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of War. He died in 1831 at the age of 73. Pastels & charcoal on tinted paper.
