This is an historically accurate portrait of a Welsh housewife in Welsh national dress in 1885. I would love to know the history behind that rather odd hat, apparently worn indoors by all Welsh women at that time! The title is composed of two homonyms—dour, the word that means “relentlessly severe” or “gloomy” and dower, the word that means “that part of a deceased husband’s property that goes to the widow for her lifetime." Doesn’t she look like a gloomy widow?
